In August, 124,600 tonnes of fish were landed in Peruvian ports, 21.8 per cent fewer than in the same month in 2013, when landings totalled 159,300 tonnes. This decrease was primarily due to lower anchovy catches.
However, when evaluating the first eight months of 2014, it can be observed that total seafood landings fell by 9.7 per cent yoy, from 3.4 million tonnes in 2013 to 3.1 million tonnes this year.
According to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by the Ministry of Production(Produce), in the eighth month of 2014, 20,300 tonnes of fish for the fishmeal industry were discharged, 70.1 per cent fewer than in the same month in 2013 (67,700 tonnes).
During the period from January to August, 2.2 million tonnes of fishery resources were used for indirect consumption, compared to 2.6 million tonnes in 2013, that is to say 13.5 per cent less.
For direct human consumption, 104,200 tonnes of fish were landed in August compared to 91,600 tonnes in the same month of 2013.
During the first eight months of 2014, 856,500 tonnes of fishery resources for direct consumption were used, 2.2 per cent more than last year (838,200 tonnes).
For the preparation of frozen products, 61,100 tonnes were landed in late August, while in the same month of 2013, 42,600 tonnes had been downloaded.
The accumulated landing for this industry between January and August this year totalled 479,900 tonnes, up 5.2 per cent on the same period in 2013, when 456,100 tonnes were discharged.
On the other hand, the fishery resources used by the canning industry in August 2014 totalled 6,000 tonnes, compared with 15,200 tonnes in the same month last year.
Considering the first eight months of 2014, a decrease of 19.3 per cent was verified in the resources used by the canning industry: 66,700 tonnes compared to 82,600 tonnes in the same period of 2013.
Landings for direct human consumption as fresh reached about 34,800 tonnes last August, while in the same month last year 30,400 tonnes were recorded.
Meanwhile, in the first eight months of 2014, 290.100 tonnes of resources were landed for fresh consumption, 9.9 per cent more than in the same period in 2013 (263,900 tonnes).
